Writing Process

Individuals have private rituals that work for them when practicing an art.  I read a book that talked about how different writers write.  Everyone seems to work differently. I read of some people who had to get up early to write and they would spend at least two hours writing at about five a.m. in the morning.  This wouldn’t work for me as I am a late night person.  What does seem to work for me is to have completed any chores first so I can throw myself into writing without having to worry about what I have to do.  And to have eaten well so my blood sugar is up.  I like to drink seltzer water while I write, and if I haven’t already had too much, I like to drink coffee while I write as well.

I was thinking over writing tips on how to start a book recently.  I am not really trying to write a book myself right now but my partner is.  He has never written one before and so he is learning as he goes. He first thought the right way of how to start a book would be to outline his story.  But he found when he did so that it didn’t work for him, so now he is just sitting down daily to write and he’s collecting a lot of writing for his book.  It’s not really a linear story anyway, so the process works great so far.  If it were a more linear story, then probably this way wouldn’t work.  I don’t think he has even written what will later be the beginning of his story anyway, but still he’s definitely making progress on the book as a whole. I’m sure everyone approaches this process differently, and probably each person approaches each book differently as well.  Because what works well in one project may not fit for a different type of project.
