It’s important many areas of life to be willing to consider the points of view of other people. If each of us did not ever do this, it is unlikely we would change much over time. I think change and growth are important, and I think improving oneself is a valid goal in life. It depends what your interests and hobbies are of course, to give you areas in which to grow and change and improve yourself. If you are a golfer, or like to go out on off road vehicles for example, the process of learning for you will probably be much different than if you are a writer or an actor.
I am a writer, and it’s taken me a long time to learn what types of writing I like to do. Over the years I have learned much from other writers plus teachers of writing and I have taken many writing tips to heart and adapted them to my writing process. I believe I have improved in the meantime. But I am still learning and improving. One of the writing tips that has helped me the most involves the process of free writing.
This is where you take pen to paper and you just write. You are not allowed to think about what you are writing, or to guide the writing based on any outside idea or goal. The goal is to write as fast as possible with no mind to what you are writing. I have noticed through doing this how much of my subconscious mind shows itself in this type of writing. Insecurities and basic beliefs come out all over the place, as do patterns. It is definitely a type of free association and sometimes it’s surprising how emotional and dark such writing can be. I have obtained many creative ideas and insights through engaging in free writing, especially if I do it in the morning before I have fully woken up.
