Many authors have compared writing book to running a marathon since it requires discipline and a sustained effort in order to succeed. Depending on the length of the book, it can take several weeks or months to complete and you will have to maintain your interest in it for however long it takes to write. Here are some tips on how to write a book effectively.
1. Set up a small area in your home as a writers den where you can write without being disturbed. Of course, this may not be feasible for all writers, particularly those who live with their families in small houses, so instead they can pick a time to write during which they will not be disturbed, i.e. after midnight when everyone is asleep.
2. Set goals for your writing. While the ideal is for you to treat writing book as a full-time job with fixed hours, this may not be enough to ensure that you are productive, so you should also set a goal as to the number of words you will write in a day or a week. This will ensure that you make measurable progress on your book.
3. If possible, find a person that you trust to read your work as you progress. This will help ensure that any mistakes and continuity errors that you make will be caught so that they won’t end up in the final work as well as providing you with constructive criticism. This person can also help you progress by providing encouragement and asking about how much work you’ve done today.
4. Don’t be too hard on yourself. There will be days when you don’t feel like writing so don’t hesitate to occasionally cut your writing day short or take a day off. But avoid taking too long a time off since this will make it harder for you to get back into the rhythm of writing.
5. Unless you have a pending deadline, once you’re done writing book put it aside for a while so that you can return to it later with a fresh eye that will help you when you’re doing rewrites and revisions.
